Some say our country is more divided than ever, and a movement in California is calling into question whether or not our nation is truly “indivisible.”
Starting this month, a group of secessionists called Yes California will begin collecting signatures in their quest to establish California as a sovereign country, separate from the United States. If the group collects enough signatures, Californians will be able to vote in 2019 on whether or not they want to remain a part of the union.
Supporters say that prosperous California subsidizes other states in a way that is detrimental to Californians. The group states on its home page: “In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children.”
So, what if “Calexit” were to become a reality? How would California stack up against other countries? We compared to California to other countries on a variety of different criteria, such as: GDP, population, land area, median income and fertility rate.
