After a loss to Bishop’s earlier this season, La Jolla High’s varsity lacrosse squad held on to a two-point halftime lead over the late-rallying Knights and went on to win 7-5. The victory advanced the Vikings to the second CIF playoff round against the Torrey Pines Falcons.
A big, noisy crowd attended the playoff match-up Saturday afternoon at Bishop’s where the Vikings and Knights tied 1-1 in the first quarter before La Jolla jumped to a 4-2 lead at halftime.
Scoring two quick goals and another in the third quarter, Bishop’s rallied hard, but La Jolla answered with two goals of its own in the third. A fourth-quarter shot by Vikings sophomore Taylor Bourgeois put the game out of reach.
Senior attackman Drew Newberry led the LJHS scoring with three goals, while senior midfielder Spencer Robertson had two goals and three assists. Both players, along with senior teammate Marcus Matibag, are headed to the University of Oregon, Eugene, come fall.
Sophomores Bourgeois and Will Peterson contributed a goal apiece for La Jolla. Underrated Vikings goalie Josh Sandrock tallied an impressive 15 saves.
Senior midfielder Thomas Tighe led the Knights’ offense with four goals and an assist; senior attackman Conner Thomas contributed another goal and two assists. Junior midfielder Michael D. Jensen won nine of his 12 faceoffs and junior goalie Jack Kelly had nine saves.
