Good tennis teams at La Jolla High School are like nice weather in San Diego: Some things just seem natural.
The Viking boys tennis team recently wrapped up another winning campaign, finishing with a record of 19-2 for first-year head coach Lenny Lee.
La Jolla captured the Western League crown with an unbeaten run, and also secured its eighth straight CIF Division title. In its history, La Jolla has captured a state-record 41 CIF titles.
“We only had five returnees this season, so I was pleasantly surprised with how we did,” Lee commented. “We were able to build some good doubles teams from scratch and maintain the school’s strong commitment to tennis.”
It was a sea of Vikings in the Western League Finals, as Thomas Keiffer defeated teammate P.J. Woolley for the singles title, while the doubles team of Adam Furman and Trey Van Buskirk topped teammates Theo Lee and Daniel Lapidus for the doubles crown. In the CIF Tournament, Furman and Van Buskirk reached the quarterfinals in the doubles competition.
La Jolla’s only two team losses on the season were to Poway High and neighboring Torrey Pines High.
