
At approximately 1:47 a.m. on Dec. 29, the San Diego Police Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call regarding a possible shooting inside a residence in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue. Patrol officers arrived on scene a few minutes later and found a 44-year-old male inside, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The officers began administering CPR until relieved by paramedics. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 2:30 a.m. Investigators from the Homicide Unit responded to the scene and are handling the investigation. The investigation is still in the early stages and no motive has been determined at this time. Police do know there were several other residents and occupants in the residence at the time of the incident, and the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle belonging to one of them. The victim has been identified as 44 year-old Marcantony Mendivil. Despite an exhaustive search, Mendivil’s next of kin have not yet been located. The suspects that were arrested have been identified as 50-year-old Paul Weinberger and 37-year-old Freddy Sosa. Weinberger lived in the residence where the homicide occurred. Weinberger and Sosa were arraigned on Jan. 3. The Homicide Unit will not comment on any possible motives in this case. Further inquiries should be directed to the District Attorney’s Office.
