University City updates: Cars and coffee, sights, sounds, and flying trees

Cars and coffee
Nostalgia and excitement were both prominent feelings as approximately 15 classic and new automobiles were on display at the first UC Cars and Coffee event held March 18. The showcase event was intended to bring University City’s car enthusiasts together to share in coffee, donuts and conversation. “Building classic cars was a family affair growing up in my household,” stated UC resident Mike O’Sullivan, the event organizer. “I helped my father build this 1932 Ford Roadster while in college. When he was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, he decided to ship the car out to my home. This Cars and Coffee event is an opportunity to share my father’s workmanship and passion for cars with other like-minded people and I know he’d be proud.” More than 50 people who participated in the event expressed interest in follow-on events. As a result, the UC Cars and Coffee will meet-up on a regular basis and the next event will be on Saturday, April 29 from 8 to 10 a.m. behind Golden Donut in the Vons shopping center on Governor Drive. For more details on future events, check out the UC Cars and Coffee group on Facebook or on Instagram at #UCCarsandCoffee. Sights and sounds showcase
The third annual UCHS “Sights and Sounds” showcase will be on Friday, April 14, 6 p.m. at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center on Executive Drive. The event begins with a silent auction and cocktails for adults with the Standley Middle School music director, Phillip Marcus, and his trio. The evening show features UCHS staff, students, and UCHS music director Brandon Corenman with Latin jazz band “Rumba y Soul.” Tickets are $35 for adults, $20 SDUSD staff, and $13 for students under 21. For more information, visit www.uchsmusic.com. The “Sights and Sounds” showcase is sponsored by the UCHS Music Boosters/Centurion Foundation, Regency Costa Verde Center, and UCCA. All proceeds benefit the UCHS Music Program. Come support our talented student musicians!
All about the trees
“It’s a bird, it’s a plane… It’s a helicopter, lifting a tree.” Greg Barnes, a UC Neighborhood Watch captain, witnessed the moving of the trees at Westfield UTC Shopping Center. He provided an explanation that “They are moving trees that had been preserved when they tore up the parking lots and took down buildings. Rather than put them on a flatbed, where they would have to be put on their side (and possible damage) and where it would be hard to get them into some of the places they are to go, they are using the helicopter to pick them straight up and lower them to the exact spot in the new construction.” A total of 16 full-grown trees were airlifted into Westfield UTC from nurseries throughout the United States to line the walkways in the new development. Among those trees, were several olive and coral trees. Later this year various palm trees will be brought into the new development as well. Easter fun
Families (especially the little ones) can enjoy Easter activities around UC, including two Easter egg hunts. The Standley Rec Center Spring Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to noon, for children ages one to 10, at Standley Park. There will be face painting, arts/crafts, egg coloring, jumpies, and more. Of course, there will be a visit by the Spring Bunny. Please bring your own basket to collect the eggs for fifth grade.
The University City United Church will be having the Easter Bunny holding court on Saturday, April 15. The church will be holding a free Easter fair from 9 to 10:30 a.m., with an Easter egg hunt taking place at 10 a.m. There will be traditional games, snacks and crafts, and children can also have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny.
“This is a very fun and joyful event,” said UCUC Minister Iona Dickinson. “Everyone is welcome.” University City United Church is at 2877 Governor Drive, at the corner of Stresemann Street. Additionally, area churches will be hosting special Easter services on Sunday, April 16, including: Grace City Church at UC High School, 10:30am, come early to enjoy breakfast burritos and other fun activities; Harbor Church at Standley Middle School, 10 a.m.; and First Baptist Church, 9 and 10:30 a.m., nursery and children’s program at each service up to fifth grade.
Good deeds: EdUCate! EdUCate! honored their VIP and legacy donors with a party at Roy’s in Costa Verde on March 21. In attendance were many founding members from the original 1993 board and other longtime supporters.
Over the years, EdUCate! has had a wonderful variety of donors from parents with children attending UC schools to caring community members with no children. Attendees enjoyed drinks and food and had a chance to review EdUCate!’s current programs as well as a few dream projects. Also on display were thank you notes from children from all five UC public schools. The evening ended with many new donations to help continue to provide special programs and grants for our local schools. Roy’s provided additional fun with a drawing for gift cards and signed cookbooks. EdUCate! wishes to thank our honored guests for making the evening such a wonderful event and donating over $14,000. EdUCate! has distributed over $1,600,000 to benefit the five public schools in University City. To learn more about EdUCate! and their support of the neighborhood schools, go to www.uc-educate.org.
