The trial of a woman who struck six bicyclists on Fiesta Island while allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine has begun in San Diego Superior Court.
Jury selection started Sept. 24 and resumed Monday in the case against Theresa Lynn Owens, 50, of San Diego involving the Aug. 12, 2014 collision at 1000 Fiesta Island Road. Owens was driving the wrong way.
Juan Carlos Vinolo, 44, was paralyzed from the waist down and was expected to testify. Owens is accused of causing great bodily injury to him. Others who were injured were expected to testify including Lance Bass, 27, of Pacific Beach.
Some of the bicyclists testified in the May 21 preliminary hearing and said Owens was screaming, twitching, and appeared to be in shock. Bystanders held her for police. An officer testified that Owens admitted to him that she “did a small line of meth this morning because of my back pain.”
If convicted of all charges, she faces a maximum sentence of 18 years in prison. She is also accused of methamphetamine possession and an unrelated DUI charge in a separate incident in Clairemont. One jury has already determined she is mentally competent to stand trial. She remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility on $100,000 bail.
