Despite showing rust from their outdoor ed/college trip bye week, the La Jolla Country Day School football team improved to 6-1, 4-0 with a 55-24 win over Tri-City Christian last weekend.
Leading only 15-10 at the half, the Big Blue outscored TCC 40-14 in the second half.
LJCD’s Kevin Ings rushed for 250 yards and four touchdowns (3, 32, 20, 8 yards) on 18 carries to lead the Torreys. QB Matt Mulligan hit 7-of-16 passes for 138 yards and two TDs. TE Mark Schu caught three passes for 55 yards, while wing Alex Maire caught three passes for 38 yards and one TD. Maire also returned a TCC kickoff 88 yards for a TD. TE Jaime Coleman caught one pass for a 45-yard TD.
Safety Montell Allen led all Torrey tacklers with nine stops (six solos). The Torrey defense collected three interceptions as Damian Bagby, Alex Papageorge and Chris Birks each hauled in a pick. Kicker Travis Golia was 5-of-6 on PAT attempts with one kick blocked.
This Friday, Nov. 3, LJCD will host Calipateria for Homecoming at 7 p.m.
LJCD’s junior varsity squad topped TCC 44-0 to run their record to 6-1.
Speaking of Homecoming, La Jolla High (3-6) made sure it was a good one last Friday evening in their win over San Diego High at Edwards Stadium.
The Vikings dominated the first half play to take a 31-6 halftime lead, and cruised to a 38-14 victory.
The Vikings opened the game with a floater kick by kicker Andres Liera that was recovered at the Cavers’ 32 by Blake Shelburne. The La Jolla offense responded on the first play by springing junior tailback Jerrell Agnew on a touchdown run off tackle.
Leading 7-6 in the second quarter, the Vikings responded with a drive that was capped off by a 20-yard counter-run by Agnew, who followed pulling tackle junior Kevin Leyva off of left tackle to score. On the next San Diego drive, senior defensive end Edward Johnson read the screen pass and made a spectacular one-handed interception, rumbling 37 yards to the end zone to make it 20-6.
The Viking defense was not finished, however. Junior cornerback Spencer Moyer intercepted a pass to give the Vikings the ball deep in Caver territory. Quarterback Casey Richmond hit wide receiver Igor Seriba with a pretty 13-yard gain, and that set up junior fullback Ja’Rodd Watson for a 13-yard trap down to the 4. On the next play, Watson crossed the goal line and the PAT made it 28-6.
On San Diego’s next series, two sacks by Garret Anderson forced a Caver punt. La Jolla’s offense used its no-huddle offense to move the ball 62 yards in just two minutes. With just 0:08 seconds left in the half, Liera connected on a 25-yard field goal to give the Vikings a 31-6 lead, and they never looked back. Matt Vachon scored La Jolla’s second-half tally on a 1-yard run.
For the evening, the defense was led by the defensive line of Johnson, Watson and senior Richard Moore.
They, along with weak-side linebacker Anderson, forced havoc most of the night for San Diego’s offense. On the La Jolla side of the ball, offensive coordinator Anthony Hill’s running game picked up more than 300 yards for the evening. Agnew finished the evening with 93 yards on just six carries.
“It was nice getting back on the winning track and beating San Diego for a Homecoming win,” La Jolla High head coach Dave Ponsford noted. “It was a great weekend for the kids, and I am sure our guys enjoyed the Homecoming dance a lot more with the victory.”
The Vikings have a bye this weekend, before ending the regular season at Hoover on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
Finally, The Bishop’s School dropped a hard-fought 28-26 decision to Christian High.
Bishop’s Tommy Wornham completed 12-of-23 passes for two TDs and 162 yards on the night. Saron Hood had six receptions for 56 yards and one TD.
Chase Jensen had a great night on both sides of the ball. From the tight end position, he caught four passes for 64 yards. From middle linebacker spot, he had 13 tackles. Tim Costello was the leading rusher with 67 yards on 11 carries and a TD. Patrick Carrillo and Michael Strauss each had 12 tackles for the Knights.
“I’m very pleased with our effort tonight,” Bishop’s head coach Mike David remarked. “I think we showed that we are one of the better teams in our division. We hope to improve each week and into the playoffs.”
