Golf isn’t the only feature at this year’s Farmers Insurance Open golf tourney – in fact, a companion event touts local surfers hoping to ride their way into the Guinness Book of World Records with the most riders on a single wave.
The One Wave Challenge, first of its kind in San Diego, is kicking off the tourney at La Jolla Shores on Saturday, Jan. 23. Two hundred surfers will gather for the chance to beat the current world record, set six years ago, in Cape Town, South Africa, when 110 surfers rode a single wave to shore. The event, supported by the charitable Century Club, will benefit Boys to Men, a San Diego nonprofit dedicated to guiding and supporting often fatherless, boys on their journey to manhood. “We are proud,” said Boys to Men Executive Director Craig McClain, “to develop this exciting partnership with the Century Club and the Farmers Insurance Open. The One Wave Challenge gives surfers of all ages and abilities the chance to participate in something much larger than themselves at the start of a new year. We see the event generating a spirit of excitement and possibility that will inspire our work throughout the coming year.” Registration and breakfast is set for 7 to 8 a.m. with the paddle-out between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and the ride from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Sandollar will provide the live music. The $50 registration fee includes breakfast, rash guard, a T-shirt, and a beachside concert. For more, call Boys to Men at (619) 469-9599. – CBS8
