Will musical group the Yeah Yeah Yeahs be at the 22nd Annual Street Scene music festival this weekend? Oh, yeah.
The New York City-based rock band will perform along with Tool, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West and dozens of other big-name musical groups as San Diego’s largest outdoor music festival, Street Scene 2006, comes to the parking lot of Qualcomm Stadium Friday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 5.
Tens of thousands of fans will flock as the home of Chargers tailgate parties and used-car tent supersales transforms into a sprawling asphalt venue in the middle of Mission Valley.
Kids can come this year, as it’s now an all-ages show, though they’ll have to save their allowance. The cost of entrance has increased to $75 for a one-day pass.
Headlining on Friday is Kanye West, AFI, Social Distortion, Wu Tang Clan, Queens of the Stone Age and Yellowcard, along with local acts Reeve Oliver and Slightly Stoopid.
On Saturday, see Tool, Snoop Dogg, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Chemical Romance, Donavon Frankenreiter, the Subways, Editors, Bedouin Soundclash and G. Love & Special Sauce.
In addition to musical acts, there will be a variety of food and drink, and attractions such as Mutaytor, a circus act with fire dancers, tribal drums, aerial acrobatics and visual effects; a vaudeville/burlesque act; a Drag Show; carnival rides; and arts and crafts vendors.
According to the event’s Web site, the first Street Scene was held in 1984 as two festivals, one in May and one in August. It was part of the renaissance of downtown and the East Village in the early 1980s and occupied a block on 5th Avenue between J and K streets. The event was held in the vicinity of this original location until 2004, when it moved to the area adjacent to Petco Park.
In 2005, Street Scene dropped the “street” and moved to the parking lot of Qualcomm Stadium, where it could accommodate the swelling crowds with more room for musical and peripheral attractions and provide more parking.
Larger headliner performers were also brought in, and the event began to be geared towards a younger, all-ages crowd. Crowd attendance has topped 100,000 for both days in recent years.
Street Scene is all-ages except for designated areas where alcohol is served. Tickets cost $75 for a single day and $115 for a two-day pass. Special VIP packages include dinner, parking and access to VIP areas and range from $350 to $700 depending on number of people and days. On-site parking is $15, though tailgating is not permitted.
The lot opens every day at noon. Gates open at 3 p.m., with music beginning around 3:45 p.m. Music plays until midnight both days.
