With CIFs just around the corner, several local scholastic girls volleyball teams are looking to get on a roll.
La Jolla Country Day School under head coach Peter Ogle faced a pair of tough opponents in The Bishop’s School and Tri-City Christian recently, dropping both matches 3-0.
In a meet with neighboring Bishop’s School, LJCD saw the first game tied at 24 before Bishop’s scored the final two winning points. The next two games were won by Bishop’s 25-17 and 25-18.
Lauren Birks led the Lady Torreys with 22 kills and 26 digs for the week. Mollie Rogers had 10 kills and 15 digs. Chloe Mathis had 26 assists, while Mary Mack contributed 22 assists.
Cheyenne Giesecke had 17 digs as the Lady Torreys’ libero.
Meantime, La Jolla High and head coach Dave Jones swept Point Loma last Monday in their only match of the week.
The win brought the Lady Vikings to 8-1 in Western League (behind Cathedral) and 20-6 overall.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights last week played four matches, winning them all to run the season record to 18-8 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Knights traveled to Tri-City Christian and had to come from behind to win.
Bishop’s was down 1-2 and won the last two games to take the match. Thea Derrough led the way with 13 kills and Jacqueline Rhodes tallied 11 kills and three aces.
On Thursday, Bishop’s visited Canyon Crest Academy and, after a slow start, gathered itself to win the match, 3-1.
Kristen Casey was the kill leader with 12, and Carly Guiducci and Alex Pell provided strong serving that was instrumental in the win.
On Friday, Bishop’s played a Coastal League South match against Horizon and won in three straight games.
Carly Bollert led the way (12 kills, three blocks), and the Lady Knights received great setting from Julie Gantz and Ina Kamenova.
On Saturday, Sage Hill (Orange County) came to Bishop’s and the hosts won again in three straight games.
“We played solid volleyball throughout the match,” Bishop’s head coach Tod Mattox said.
Bollert had 11 kills with no errors, while Brittany Allen tallied three aces. Senior libero Laurel Casey recorded 14 digs.
