A ribbon-cutting ceremony, giveaways, performances and light refreshments will mark the Wednesday, Dec. 9 public opening of the renovated Shepherd YMCA Firehouse, which features a family wellness center with state-of-the-art cardio and strength equipment, multi-purpose exercise studios and youth programs such as gymnastics and karate. The facility will specialize in small-group training and premium classes as well as customized family wellness programs.
The free event starts at 9 a.m. The century-old property, at 7877 Herschel Ave., began its $1.5 million restoration and renovation project in June and held a soft opening on Dec. 1. The project is part of a campaign that includes the expansion of the Y’s 50-year-old main location on Cliffridge Avenue. An aquatics center, a childcare facility and studio spaces are included in the larger renovation. The nonprofit La Jolla Y serves more than 18,000 people a year.
