PACIFIC BEACH — Bill Harris, a representative of the San Diego Storm Water Maintenance Program, presented the Pacific Beach Planning Group (PBPG) with information about the city’s plan to clear vegetation along waterways in an effort to improve water quality and control flooding. The presentation was given during the planning group’s monthly meeting on July 28. Rory Allen, a legal intern with San Diego Coastkeeper, presented information later in the meeting explaining why the PBPG should not support the city’s current plan. Coastkeeper’s main concern was that by clearing vegetation out of the water channels, the city would be removing the natural filters that clean storm water run-off before it enters the ocean. San Diego Coastkeeper and city officials are meeting today, July 29, in an effort to reach a compromise. The PBPG will hold off on lending its support in either direction until it receives more information.
