BALBOA PARK — Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park received LEED Silver Certification in the category of existing buildings, operations and maintenance. The center has worked to reduce the amount of electricity and water it uses over the past 10 years. Among its environmental efforts it employs is the use of rooftop solar panels. The museum also installed automated faucets, low-flow toilets and waterless urinals. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) developed LEED, a certification system by which buildings are verified as environmentally friendly in terms of water conservation, energy savings and indoor environmental quality, according to the USBGC Web site. — DEBBIE HATCH
