Father arraigned after crash that killed son, 4 A 40-year-old man is facing hefty charges after he crashed his Nissan Titan off Interstate 5 near Old Town on June 2, rolling down an embankment near Rosecrans Street and critically injuring his 4-year-old son before fleeing the scene. The boy died of his injuries on June 11 at Rady Childrens Hospital, according to published reports. The driver, identified as Angelo Fabiani Arroyo, was arrested in Imperial Beach two days after the accident and is being charged with suspicion of hit and run causing injury and an additional count of child endangerment. He was arraigned in court this week. It was not immediately clear what additional charges he may now be facing. According to California Highway Patrol officials, Arroyo was towing a small watercraft trailer on the southbound 5 when he apparently struck the guardrail and a tree. The vehicle was sent careening off the freeway and down an embankment, where it came to rest against a retaining wall. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the driver try to free the boy, who was belted in a child-safety seat. But officials said that after releasing the child from the seat, the boy toppled out and fell 10 feet to the pavement below on Jefferson Street. At that point, Arroyo allegedly fled the scene. Although Arroyo was in possession of a valid driver’s license at the time, records reportedly show Arroyo had been subject to three driver’s license suspensions since 2010. Officer-involved shooting in Ocean Beach probed The police department’s Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate an officer-involved, fatal shooting of an allegedly gun-wielding man in Ocean Beach on June 1. Officers were dispatched shortly after 9 a.m. to the 1700 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard when a caller reported to 9-1-1 a man with a gun threatening to shoot another man. Witnesses reportedly saw the suspect get into a silver Volkswagen sedan and drive north on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. When officers spotted the vehicle and engaged in a traffic stop in the 100 block of Sea World Drive, officers reportedly ordered the man to put his hands up. The suspect ignored the officers’ commands and instead walked over to the passenger side of the vehicle, reached between the seats and retrieved what officers described as a brown and silver object, said investigators. The suspect allegedly raised the object and pointed it toward the officers, prompting one of the officers closest to the suspect to fire his duty weapon, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. A handgun was located in the suspect’s vehicle. The officer involved in the shooting is reportedly an 11-year veteran of the department. Airport wins prestigious financial reporting award The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has been honored with the certificate of achievement for excellence by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada. The honor was bestowed for the Airport Authority’s comprehensive  annual  financial report (CAFR) covering fiscal year 2012. This award marks the tenth consecutive year the Airport Authority has received the prestigious honor. According to the GFOA, the certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government body and its management. The Airport Authority’s CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to ensure it met the high standards of the competition, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR. Pointer backers grants $30,000 in help to schools The Pointer Association, the parental governing body of Point Loma High School, announced another round of financial grants to Pointer staff members recently. Association president Kevin O’Beirne listed 22 separate school departments and programs that recently received $30,000 from the group, bringing the total for the 2012-13 school year to more than $200,000. Items funded by the grant include musical instruments, a camera, payment to bring poets into classrooms, textbooks, art supplies, drama materials and student planners. The nonprofit Pointer Association exists to support all Point Loma High students, faculty and staff in providing an excellent educational experience for every student. In dispersing funds based on written requests, the organization seeks a balance between “The Three A’s: Academics, the Arts and Athletics.” — Scott Hopkins

The church started the unusual custom last year, inspired by the long tradition some churches have of blessing fishing fleets. “We believe God’s just as relevant to our lives today as He was 2,000 years ago,” said one church member. “And surf culture runs deep in Ocean Beach. It was a natural fit.” The blessing is free and open to everyone. This year the church will be blessing surfboards from 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of St. Peter’s by the Sea at the corner of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Point Loma Avenue.
