From the beginning of time, humans have held court to the appeal of gardens. Among the most famous cases of such fascination: Adam tempting Eve in the lush Garden of Eden, and the Gardens of Babylon, hailed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Point Loma citizens continue the tradition at the Point Loma Garden Walk on Saturday, April, 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning at 3615 Lotus Drive.
“The Garden Walk is a walking tour where we have 14 gardens, four of which also feature home tours, in the Plumosa Park area,” said Pam Caldwell, president of the Dana Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary. “We have a little something for everyone, including little small, pocket gardens to large lots, canyon lots, ultramodern and historical architecture.”
A self-guided tour, garden boutique, herb gardens, fern gardens, garden gifts by local artists, some unusual garden plantings, refreshments and much more will be available at the sixth annual event, which raises funds for Rady Children’s Hospital.
“We were a small group, and we were interested in the gardens in the neighborhood, and we know that we live in a very special area of town and wanted to share that with the community,” she said.
“We have been out there admiring our neighbor’s gardens and we figured this would be a great way to work this tour in as a fund-raiser.”
The walk has grown from a modest beginning. Last year, the Dana Unit, a nonprofit organization, raised $17,500.
The funds benefit Craniofacial Services at the hospital, along with its child patients .Participants are chosen by the group each year and asked to volunteer to show off their gardens.
Variety remains key because the garden walk’s organizers want to show as much diversity as possible to offer walkers as much information and tips as to what might work in their own gardens.
“I am a member of the Dana Unit, and a lot the meetings have been at my house. A lot of people have told me that I needed to put my garden on display because I have a four-level deck with a great city view,” said walk participant Pat Wise. “I thought about it and I really like my yard. I have been working on it for 30 years, and I think it will look spectacular.”
Walkers say they eagerly anticipate the event every year because the group has a large list of repeat guests who know what they are looking for in a garden walk, and who can find it in the Point Loma event.
Tickets are $15 prior to the event, and $20 on event day.
