Three area scholastic girls water polo teams are hitting the pool hoping to surface with CIF gold this winter.
At The Bishop’s School, head coach Doug Peabody and the Lady Knights captured yet another CIF crown last season, finishing 29-2 and Western League champions.
Despite losing some key players to graduation, Bishop’s will look to USA National Junior Team Player Dominique Sardo and senior captains Zinnea Alexander and Cathy White to lead the way.
“Our toughest competition will once again be Coronado, La Jolla and University City,” Peabody said.
Bishop’s is in action on Saturday, Dec. 15, when the Lady Knights host Newport Harbor.
At La Jolla High, head coach Dante Laghetto and the Lady Vikings finished 19-11 a season ago, with a third-place spot in CIFs.
This year’s team is paced by junior Jackie Walters and sophomore Kate Woods.
“We are working hard to reach our goal of making it to the CIFs and to be able to compete with Coronado and Bishop’s,” Laghetto said. “We have a strong defense, smart offense and a lot of talented players.”
La Jolla will host Poway on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Finally, La Jolla Country Day School and head coach Steven Traverso hope to make some waves this season.
The Lady Torreys are led by senior Penny Flicker.
“The team is young and inexperienced,” Traverso said. “My goal for the season is to win the league (Central) and make CIF for the first time in school history.
“We have a long way to go, but I think that this team can do it if they put their mind to it. They are putting in a lot of hard work and they deserve it.”
LJCD will visit Patrick Henry on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
