All winter sports teams at Point Loma High School earned playoff spots. Boys basketball entered Div. III as the No. 10 seed, where they defeated No. 7 Rancho Buena Vista 43-40 before traveling to Central (El Centro), where they were eliminated by a score of 64-49.
Head coach Chris Brisco’s team finished with an overall record of 12-15 (5-7 for fifth place in the Central League). Partial statistics show sophomore Nashom Carter led the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game. Junior Darnell Johnson, at 11.2, was next. Girls basketball also entered Div. III as a No. 10 seed but was eliminated in its first game against No. 7 Valley Center by a 38-28 score.
Head coach Dave Aros’ Lady Pointers finished the season with an overall record of 10-12 (8-3, second place in Central League). Team captains were seniors Hiwalani Sierra and Lisa Regula. Girls water polo entered the Div. III playoffs as the No. 4 seed, receiving a first-round bye. They began play with a 6-5 quarterfinal win over Mater Dei Catholic before being swamped by eventual champion Hilltop 12-3 in the semifinal round.
Head coach Ken Toma, who guided the Pointer boys to their first CIF championship earlier this year, coached the Lady Pointers as well, leading them to a 14-14 overall record (4-2 for third place in the Eastern League), a significant improvement over previous seasons.
Senior Hejira Whittaker led all scorers with 45 goals and 23 assists. Senior Kayla Soria (42, 17), freshman Veronika Divis (26, 28) and senior Pia Vegas (24, 17) were right behind.
