Point Loma’s Pointers once again put up big numbers on the scoreboard last Friday when they regained control of “The Shoe” trophy from La Jolla in a 49-0 blitz that was decided by the time the annual homecoming celebration began at halftime.

The game marked the conclusion of the Pointers’ non-league schedule, a period in which they posted a 5-1 record, scoring 251 points and only giving up 70. In the five wins, the offense has scored 48, 52, 43, 45, and 49 points, something longtime fans haven’t seen for years and more often seen in basketball games.

“I’ve been doing this long enough to know where we could be and the level of our opponents and I thought it was possible. But in between, there’s a lot of time, effort, and work needed to make it a reality because sometimes talent’s not enough,” said Pointer head coach Joel Allen.

Sept. 30 marks the team’s annual bye week, and this year’s break will allow several banged-up players to heal. Versatile junior two-way player and kicking specialist Aaron Lee injured his ankle at the end of the final practice before the La Jolla game and watched from the sideline on crutches.

But for his healthy teammates, it was a night to feast on the Vikings’ defense and punish their offense, adding to the point total and repeatedly denying the frustrated Vikings.

The Pointer offense, which has started slowly in several games, took some time to heat up against the Vikings.

Early in the second quarter Chase Lowary scored the first of his three touchdowns for a 7-0 lead. Lowary also had a 12-yard run for a score and recorded a “pick six” interception return in the second half.

Cameron Lucas scored twice, once on a run and again on a pass from QB Jackson Emerson.

Brady Allen grabbed an Emerson pass and took it 29 yards to the end zone and Max Newbegin capped a late scoring drive with a 15-yard scoring run.

Defensively, Emmett Jacobson recorded his fourth and fifth interceptions of the season while Joaquin Edwards pounced on a Viking fumble.

Shea Balelo was 7-7 on PAT attempts and put several kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

“We put in the work in the offseason,” said Lucas afterward. “With how we’ve been playing and our team spirit our record isn’t surprising and it’s where we should be. I’ve had to step up for some (injured) guys and start both ways but I’ve got a great group of guys around me. It’s a team thing. The coaches are all in and they want us to succeed.”

The Pointers have risen to the No. 2 spot of 17 CIF Div. III teams, behind only undefeated Rancho Buena Vista. The first four teams earn a future first-round playoff bye.

“The (current) bye couldn’t come at a better time,” Allen said. “We’ve got some guys banged up that have been going hard since May 30.”

Coaches and players now turn their attention to four City League games that include Morse (home, Oct. 7), University City (away, Oct. 15), Mission Bay (home, Oct. 21), and Canyon Hills (away, Oct. 28).

“This little run has helped us but I think our best opponents are coming up,” Allen said.
