The sixth annual golf tournament sponsored by the Point Loma High School Vanguard Boosters swung into action at the Riverwalk Golf Course in Mission Valley on Saturday, June 2. The tournament is held each year to raise funds for the Point Loma High School Music program.
“We raised over $3,500 in profits from the tournament,” said Tamara Sales of the PLHS Vanguard Boosters. The money pays for such things as uniforms, instruments and other necessities for the band.
The members of the winning team were Curt Dokken, Russ Van Tassel, Tim Winder and Al Zale. Dokken has participated in each of the tournaments the past six years.
The Point Loma High School music program has been growing over the past four years since musical director John Dally arrived.
“The band went from 30 kids just four years ago to 95 this year, and we anticipate about 120 next year,” Sales said.
The total includes a color guard and 60 wind instruments. The band has played at football games, the Ocean Beach Parade, the Pacific Beach Parade and the Cabrillo Portuguese Festa event.
During his third year with the PLHS music program Dally won the Schuchman Award for Outstanding Secondary Instrumental Teacher of the Year from the San Diego Unified School District. He is a graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University and is currently a band representative on the California Music Educator Association of the Southern Border Section and co-manager of the SDUSD High School Honor Band.
