The Lady Pointers volleyball team reached the summit last season, winning the CIF Div. I championship, and despite losing several key players is back this season as the No. 4 seed in the tournament, which began Nov. 11.
Head coach Davis Ransom and his team, which finished 18-15 (3-7 in Western League), hosted No. 13 seed La Jolla Country Day (18-15, 4-6 in Coastal League) in the first round at PLHS’s Lee Trepanier Gym.
The winner advances to play the winner of the match between No. 5 Eastlake (20-12, 8-0 in Metro Mesa League) and No. 12 Poway (10-20, 2-8 in Palomar League) in the quarterfinals. If the Pointers won their match last night, they will host the match, set for Saturday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m.
The semifinals are set for Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m., also in the gym of the highest seeded team, while the finals will be played Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. in the Cathedral Catholic gym.
Top seeds this year in Div. I include No. 1 La Costa Canyon (20-10, 10-0 in Avocado West League) followed by No. 2 Bishop’s (21-11, 8-0 in Coastal League) and No. 3 Ramona (25-10, 9-1 in the Valley League).
The Pointers defeated Poway, Eastlake and La Jolla Country Day during the current regular season.
Last year’s Lady Pointer team finished 24-9 overall and 8-4 in Western League but came together to play their best volleyball during CIF play, eliminating La Costa Canyon (a winner of seven consecutive titles) in a memorable finals match and 2013 champion Ranch Buena Vista in the semifinals, both by 3-0 scores.
