Point Loma Cub Scout Pack 24 raised about $1,000 in popcorn sales to donate to the San Diego Firefighters 2007 Firestorm Fund, said Pack committee chair Suhail Kahlil.
The money will go to help firefighters who have lost their homes in the Southern California wildfires earlier this year.
As part of the Boy Scouts of America San Diego Imperial Council, Cub Scout Pack 24 usually donates about one-third of its proceeds from popcorn sales every year.
“That way, the kids understand the value of giving and are able to make a substantial contribution to those in need,” Kahlil said.
This year, Pack 24 presented its “Pay It Forward” donation to fire officials at the Warren-Walker School on Dec. 17 at 8:30 a.m.
In the past three years, Pack 24 has donated about $5,000 in proceeds to local charities, including about $1,500 to the Hurricane Katrina victims fund in 2005, he said.
In 2006, the pack raised about $2,500 to donate to the Home Front San Diego fund for military families.
Pack 24 is made up of mainly 5th-grade students from the Warren-Walker School in Ocean Beach. The pack holds den about once a week at Point Loma Presbyterian Community Church, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd.
As Cub Scouts the children learn about conserving natural resources, camping and being “good stewards of the community,” Kahlil said.
