Monday, Nov. 6, 1911 at 3 p.m., 28 ladies of Point Loma assembled to discuss the organization of a local “improvement society” for the benefit and development of the community. The group was named Point Loma Assembly. Land for a facility was donated by Mr. Frank S. Jennings and a building fund was started to raise money. The clubhouse, at 3035 Talbot St., was finished and the then-41 members held the first assembly meeting in the new building on Sept. 21, 1914.
Since its inception, Point Loma Assembly and its clubhouse have been serving the community in many ways. The clubhouse has provided facilities for Point Loma Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts, Sunday school and church services, parties, civic meetings, election polls, dance classes, plays, craft fairs, PTA meetings, general assemblies and kindergarten classes from Cabrillo Elementary School ” which is located across the street ” to name a few.
During World War I, the Assembly clubhouse was turned into Red Cross workrooms for sewing and knitting. During World War II, the Assembly was made into a Red Cross distribution center for all of Point Loma for sewing, knitting hospital slippers and surgical dressings. Classes were held in first aid and nutrition. The building was also used for Civilian Defense meetings, Coast Guard Volunteer Port security classes and other war activities. During the years following 1946, the Assembly has continued its civic, social and educational projects and remains an active part of the community today.
In 2004, the clubhouse was given an overall upgrade/update with painting, carpeting, window covering and kitchen appliances. Additional improvements are needed to maintain the quality of this historic and special building. The club is also responsible for all taxes, insurance, utilities and maintenance on the clubhouse.
A giving tree has been started as a way to recognize donors who contribute money for these financial needs. Anyone who donates $100 will have their name engraved on a brass leaf for the tree. Those donating $500 will have their name engraved on the brass brick foundation at the base of the tree.
We wanted to bring to your attention and remembrance this unique aspect of Point Loma and let you know of this need. We hope you will consider becoming a leaf or foundation brick on our “giving tree.”
