After a slow start, the Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) Sea Lions men’s basketball team has won its’ last four games to run their overall record to 7-4 with a win over Trinity Western University (BC) on Saturday. Prior to Saturday’s game, the Sea Lions had recently defeated Ottawa University (Kansas), Simon Fraser University (British Columbia) and Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) rival Biola University 64-55, 95-82, 81-74 and 96-88, respectively. The four wins followed a 72-65 loss to GSAC rival Fresno Pacific University. PLNU had made a valiant second-half comeback after trailing by 21 points. Rookie head basketball coach Ethan Hamilton has replaced former head coach Art Wilmore and hopes to guide PLNU back for a return trip to the nationals after the program won a playoff game in the NAIA Tournament for the first time in 50 years (1958). The Sea Lions have plenty of veteran leadership this season with several seniors: 6’10″ center Craig Austin, 6’5″ forward/guard Curtis Carlson, 6’8″ forward Brandon Johnson and 6’5″ forward Austin Wilcox. PLNU will also have two returning juniors: 5’10″ point guard Noble D’Shelton and guard Dean Colbray. After a loss to Fresno Pacific University, the Sea Lions, led by Craig Austin’s 19 points, rebounded with a win over conference rival Biola. Colbray was key in the following game with 25 points in a win over Simon Fraser University. Then Curtis Carlson led the team in scoring with 23 points in the victory over Ottawa University and 25 points over Trinity Western University.
