The girls volleyball team at Point Loma High School hoisted a trophy as champions of the recent Firebird Classic, an annual tournament hosted by Pacific Ridge High School in Carlsbad. The Lady Pointers won all seven matches over two days en route to the title, defeating Alemany High School (Mission Hills) in straight sets 25-17 and 25-21 in the finals. “It was a great team effort, and everyone stepped up to defeat Alemany,” said a happy Pointer head coach Davis Ransom, who is assisted by Daniela de Kervor. Team members Sophia Altobelli a junior libero, and sophomore outside hitter Sierra Coffo were named to the All-Tournament team, while junior outside hitter Charlie Ekstrom was named Most Valuable Player of the event. Other team members include Hailey Brockett, Angelina Desmond, Mia Hegerle, Sydney Hill, Kylie Komo, Rebecca Nuanez, Katherine Olcott, Sierra Pennell, Delaney Sanders, Reese Turner, Lauren Valenzuela and Maggie Wolf. Teams entered in the tournament besides Pacific Ridge and Alemany were El Camino, Seaquam (Delta, British Columbia), Calvin Christian and Steele Canyon. The Lady Pointers have moved into their league schedule, where they play in the Western League against La Jolla, Cathedral Catholic, Our Lady of Peace, Patrick Henry and Scripps Ranch. Upcoming home games are: Oct. 5 vs. Patrick Henry;

Oct. 19 vs. Scripps Ranch; Matches begin at 4:30 p.m.
