
Emory “Pete” Lewis and Howard “Bill” Mayfield, Point Loma High School Class of 1950, organized a reunion event Wednesday, May 16, for the 1949 football team that won both the Metro and Southern California championship.
Several players made the All-Metro team that year, and some earned scholarships to play football in college.
Bob Monfort and Manny Gomez played for Oregon, Joe Smidt went to the University of California and Buddy Lewis made the All-American team at the University of Arizona.
Special guests at the reunion included 1949 team coach Don Giddings; Bennie Edens, coach for 43 years; and current PLHS head coach Mike Hastings. Current principal Bobbie Samilson and vice principal Kevin Gormly also attended.
Other guest included representatives from PLHSFAA, PLHS football boosters and, of course, other 1949 team members.
