Domestic travel to and from San Diego International Airport is on the decline due to the coronavirus pandemic, an airport spokesperson said.
“Airports are considered essential critical infrastructure under federal and state law,” said Jonathan Heller, director of communications for the San Diego Regional Airport Authority. “We urge the public to follow the latest federal and state guidelines for essential travel. If you need to travel, take all necessary precautions and follow all the guidelines.”
Advised Heller for those flying, “Check with your airline before coming to the airport because flight schedules are changing hour-to-hour.”
The airline business in San Diego is down.
“We have seen significant flight reductions and traffic has steadily been going down since the middle of March,” said Heller. “On Sunday, March 22, there was about a 35% decrease in scheduled flights: approximately 200 fewer flights. A normal day typically has about 640 to 660 flights taking off and landing. On March 22, we had around 400 flights.”
Heller added that, in normal times, air traffic at the airport is about evenly split between business and leisure travel, and the busiest days are during the middle of the week.
