Pfizer of La Jolla recently announced that The Scripps Research Institute would be the first user of its Fabrus LLC at “The Pfizer Incubator” (TPI), located at Pfizer’s Research & Development site, 10777 Science Center Drive.
“With TPI, Pfizer hopes to explore new approaches to finding new medicines for unmet medical needs,” said Pfizer’s Alex Polinsky, who heads the Incubator. “Academic scientists come up with innovative ideas all the time, but the funding to develop those early ideas is rarely available, so TPI intends to identify the most promising ideas and help develop them.”
Pfizer plans to invest $10 million annually to help support start-ups based in the Incubator, which features eight high-tech chemistry and biology labs. The company will continue to consider research proposals and expects other occupants to move in eventually.
“I hope that as we fund more benefits and projects, the San Diego community becomes more and more familiar with TPI, its model and its benefits, so that eventually TPI becomes a partner of choice for the entrepreneurial scientists seeking to commercialize their discoveries,” Polinsky said.
