The Ocean Beach Historical Society will host a free program at 7 p.m. entitled “Miss Rankin and the Library She Built,” presented by current OB librarian Matt Beatty. Rankin was librarian at the Ocean Beach Library from 1921 to 1959. A lifelong force in Ocean Beach, she was largely responsible for getting the current OB library built and later remodel-ed. Rankin was also deeply involved in her community. The program will feature news clippings, Margaret’s own library reports and photos of the places where she lived and worked. The Friends of Famosa Slough will host a work party for volunteers to take care of native California native plants at the slough and to invasive plants. The San Diego Early Music Ensemble will perform at 4 p.m. as part of Music on the Point at All Souls’ Episcopal Church, located at 1475 Catalina Blvd. The ensemble consists of a vocal quartet and will be complemented by organist Paul Carmona, who will perform solo selections. WEDNESDAY, Jan. 22 The Point Loma Republican Women Federated’s monthly program will feature speaker Loren Spivack, who will speak on how a free society cannot survive unless people understand what is going on. Loma Portal Elementary School will host a kindergarten tour for incoming parents with kindergartners who want to see the campus, as well as those who might be interested in “choicing” into the school. The Point Loma American Cancer Society Discovery Shop will host its February jewelry spectacular featuring some special bling from a wide selection of fine jewelry. Shoppers can also find something new for their wardrobes from a selection of fashion pieces just in time for Valentines Day. Proceeds raised from the sale benefit cancer research and treatment. The sale takes place Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Feb. 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the shop, located at 3609 Midway Drive, Suite C. A fundraising comedy night will take place at the San Diego First Church of the Nazarene Family Life Center at 6:30 p.m., themed “Laughter is the Best Medicine.” The event, touted as bringing clean laughs to Point Lomans and neighbors, will raise money to aid impoverished Hondurans by developing technical schooling. The night features Christian Comedy Team 409. The work in Honduras began in 2008 in an effort founded by two Point Loma High graduates. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.
