The largest and most storied sailboat racing tour in the United States will make its second stop of the 2010 season between Mar. 19 and 21 in San Diego, when Sperry Top-Sider National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta sets sail. More than 1,000 sailors from throughout the country are expected to hit the waters of America’s Finest City for three days of racing to contend for the event’s top prize — a trip to the British Virgin Islands to compete in the NOOD championship. Event organizers said racing areas will be set in five venues throughout San Diego, including south San Diego Bay, Coronado Roads, off the shores of Point Loma, off Mission Bay and on Mission Bay. Boats within each fleet will compete in a series of races, accumulating points based on placement in each race. The boat finishing with the fewest total points will be declared the fleet winner, earning a trophy. After all races have been completed, race officials will determine an overall winner, based on the strongest finish in the most competitive fleet. The overall winner will be invited to participate in the NOOD Championship regatta in the British Virgin Islands in November to compete aboard Sunsail 39s against the overall winners from each of the eight other stops in the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD regatta series, said event organizers. Following San Diego, the regatta series will sail on to Annapolis, Md., Apr. 29-May 2. For more information, visit www.sailingworld.com.
