City, county offices will be closed Friday
All city and county government offices will be closed Friday, Nov. 10, in observation of Veterans Day. Normal business hours for city offices will resume on Monday, Nov. 13.
All city libraries, including the UC Library, 4155 Governor Drive, will be closed on Friday, Nov. 11, and Saturday, Nov. 12. As a convenience, all library book drops will remain open for book returns. Trash pickup will not be affected by the holiday closures.

A college admissions panel discussion, featuring deans of admissions from Columbia University in New York, Stanford University, University of California at San Diego and Pomona College, will be hosted by Pacific Ridge School from 1 to 3 p.m. today, Nov. 9, at the La Jolla Radisson, 3299 Holiday Court.
Parents and students from the new Pacific Ridge School in North County are invited, as well as families from La Jolla Country Day School, La Jolla High School, Cathedral Catholic High School and Francis Parker School.

Peters announces new MTS route in UC
San Diego City Council President Scott Peters and Metropolitan Transit system CEO Paul Jablonski announced a new MTS line in University City on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at a public meeting at the Westfield UTC Shopping Towne Centre.

The new service will run every 30 minutes each day of the week.
On Thursday, Oct. 26, Peters attended an event to celebrate the completion of a series of curb ramps in La Jolla.
Four new ramps were installed on Cliffridge Avenue near the La Jolla YMCA and Torrey Pines Elementary School.
Peters plans to use more than $300,00 of the city’s overall $15.5 million CDBG allocation for 2007 to support 100-plus projects, most of which will assist the disabled.

Mama’s Pie not a typical bake sale
Now in its second year, Mama’s Pie In The Sky bake sale is aiming to sell 5,000 pies and raise a lot of dough ” $100,000 this go-around. The money generated from pies made by San Diego’s top bakers, caterers and chefs, including the Sycuan Resort and Casino and The French Gourmet, directly funds thousands of free, hot nutritious meals to those living with HIV/AIDS or other critical illnesses in the community.
Mama’s Pie offers pecan, pumpkin, apple and sugar-free apple pies for sale through Nov. 15, for $20 each. Pies are available for pickup on Wednesday, Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving. More than 30 sites around the county offer ordering and pickup. The UC area pick-up site is Wells Fargo bank, 4315 La Jolla Village Drive.
The pie sales help to curb the reduction in funding from the federal government. In recent years, Ryan White AIDS funding has been reduced from 30 percent of the organization’s annual budget to its current 17 percent. For information, visit mamaskitchen.org or call (619) 233-6262.

‘Day of Giving’ food drive launches in San Diego
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage San Diego and the Inland Empire will hold a “Day of Giving” food drive through Tuesday, Nov. 21, to collect canned goods for needy families.
Donations can be dropped off at any of 34 local offices throughout San Diego. Food will be distributed to charity organizations in each office’s community on Nov. 22.
The program, sponsored by the Coldwell Banker Community Foundation, began last year at the company’s Los Angeles and Orange County offices and was successful enough to expand to San Diego for the 2006 holidays.

‘Reagan’ bandit arrested at UCSD
The “Ronald Reagan” bandit was arrested by University of California, San Diego (UCSD) police Sept. 12 at approximately 3 a.m., after officers noticed him parked in a faculty spot.
Police officers had issued a warrant for Gerald Jones for allegedly robbing the Bank of America on Mission Gorge Road at gunpoint while wearing a Ronald Reagan mask. Jones has also been linked to other San Diego robberies.
A UCSD police officer spoke with the driver of the parked car on Sept. 12, who identified himself as Gerald Jones. The officer ran a computer check on Jones, discovered the warrant and arrested the suspect. Police discovered a handgun and other evidence associated with area robberies in the vehicle.
“This officer was just doing good police work with something of a suspicious circumstance, with an individual parked out in a reserved parking spot at 3 a.m.,” said Lt. Lawrence McKinney of the San Diego Police Department.
The Ronald Reagan robbery was seemingly doomed from the beginning. After entering the bank and brandishing the gun, Jones dropped the weapon. He demanded cash from the teller and fled on foot to discover that his escape vehicle had been blocked by two delivery trucks. Jones removed his mask, argued with one of the drivers and then rammed his way free. Meanwhile, the dye pack had exploded.
Jones drove a few blocks and then abandoned his vehicle with the gun and mask inside. On Sept. 13, the crime lab matched DNA from the Ronald Reagan mask to Jones. Jones is a felon whose past includes arrests for robbery using a firearm and assault with a deadly weapon. Detectives are continuing the investigation into Jones’ possible involvement in other robberies.
