Kids Fishing Derby takes over Crystal Pier on Sat.
Capt. Ron Baker wants kids to get hooked on sports fishing, so he and scores of parents and volunteers will be baiting hooks for the first annual Crystal Pier Kids Classic Youth Fishing Derby Saturday, Aug. 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The pier will be closed to the public to give the anglers 15 and younger the chance to catch mackerel, guitarfish, surf perch and maybe even a prize yellowtail.
Bait will be provided, but with a limited number of poles available, it’s recommended that kids bring their own fishing pole. Registration for the catch-and-release fishing derby is only available at the pier the day of the event.
Lunch will be provided for the participants, who will also have the chance to win a number of raffle prizes.

PB Town Council meets Wednesday, Aug. 20
The Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) will be discussing a variety of issues that affect the community at its monthly general meeting Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Earl & Birdie Taylor Library.
The council will be listening to a presentation by local business owners regarding changes on their existing business licenses.
Stay Classy will also give a presentation on the groups four-mile Fire Run from La Jolla to Pacific Beach Saturday, Aug. 23.

Lifeguards gather for Ron Trenton relay competition
San Diego lifeguards past and present will come together to celebrate 90 years of San Diego lifeguard history and compete against each other in the 54th annual Ron Trenton Memorial Lifeguard Relays Thursday, Aug. 14.
The event will be held at the WaveHouse at Belmont Park beginning with the reunion at 4 p.m. The private reunion will feature a historic photo exhibit of the lifeguards throughout their time on San Diego’s beaches.
At 5 p.m. the lifeguards will move to the sand for the alumni lifeguard relays. The relays will feature 12 categories of rescue techniques used in ocean rescues, including running, swimming, paddleboarding and landline rescue.
The RT Memorial Relays begins at 6 p.m., with the four Lifeguard Services departments competing against each other for bragging rights. The four divisions include:
“¢ Southern: Ocean Beach and Mission Bay
“¢ Central: Mission Beach and Pacific Beach
“¢ Northern: La Jolla’s beaches
“¢ Boating Safety Unit
The longstanding event was named after veteran lifeguard and longtime Northern team captain Ronald B. Trenton, who was lost at sea piloting a private plane from San Diego to Catalina Island in 1997.
Vendor booths available at Movies at the Park
A limited number of community-oriented sales booths are available for vendors at the upcoming Movies in the Park Sunday, Aug. 23, at Kate Sessions Park.
The Pacific Beach Recreation Center is showing “Surfs Up,” an animated kids movie about surfing penguins at dusk, but the family activities begin at 5 p.m. with games and activities for kids.

Big dog adoption event planned for Saturday
A number of county animal groups are bringing out the big dogs.
The second annual big dogs adoption event is returning to Fiesta Island Sunday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held across from the fenced-in off-leash area near the OTL field.
Of the approximately 100 dogs and puppies available for adoption will either weigh or eventually grow to weigh 50 pounds or more.
To help the dogs adjust to their new homes, each adoptive family will be given a doggie bag filled with healthy dog food, grooming products, toys, coupons and gift certificates for pet services.
Organizers are also looking for volunteers to join them along with Fiesta Island Dog Owners (FIDO) and I Love a Clean San Diego to clean up the fenced-in off-leash area from 9 to 11 a.m. For information visit www.fidosd.org.

Taylor Library hosts henna tattoo workshop
The Earl & Birdie Taylor Library is inviting the public to a free workshop on the art of henna tattoos Thursday, Aug. 14, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The class will learn about the history behind body art and will receive henna tattoos applied by a professional.

Marathon runs through Point Loma to downtown
The 31st annual America’s Finest City Half-Marathon and its companion 5K run around Balboa Park return to San Diego on Sunday, Aug. 17, blazing a trail with thousands of runners, athletes and amateur competitors through Point Loma and downtown.
The 5k run around Balboa Park begins at 6:45 a.m., while the half-marathon starts at 7 a.m.
