OB People’s Food Market to host fall art show Ocean Beach People’s Organic Food Market (OBPOFM), San Diego’s customer-owned natural foods grocery, will host its third gallery exhibition of 2008 from Friday, Sept 26 through Wednesday, Dec. 31. The Fall Art Show is a group show featuring local artists Weston Riffle, Stephen Rowell and Lisa Bella Bryson. An artist’s reception will launch the show on Sept. 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., with music, food and art on display. The event is free. Slightly Stoopid captures SDMA best-album honor A popular Ocean Beach-based band claimed top honors during the 2008 San Diego Music Awards held Sept. 17 at Viejas Concerts in the Park. Taking top honor for Album of the Year was OB’s Slightly Stoopid, with its recent release of Chronitis. The popular group’s repertoire is a fusion of acoustic rock and blues with reggae, hip-hop and punk. As a band, Slightly Stooped has released seven albums — two of which are live versions — with their fifth studio album, Chronitis, released Aug. 7. All proceeds from the San Diego Music Awards are used to purchase Taylor guitars for San Diego County schools. A total of $41,327.00 was raised in 2008 from ticket sales, sponsorships and donations. Annual reuse/repair fair set at library Saturday  In partnership with the Hervey/Point Loma Branch Library, Zero Waste San Diego will hold its second annual Reuse/Repair Fair and EcoFilm Festival at the library Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free event will feature more than a dozen exhibitors and hands-on workshops, four films and activities for children as well as adults. The library is located at 3701 Voltaire St.  Featured movies include Annie Leonard’s hit film “The Story of Stuff,” a humorous and poignant animated short masterfully summarizing the true impacts and costs of our consumer-driven culture. Workshops include leather repair, composting and vermicomposting (using worms), papermaking, furniture repair and even how to turn old sweaters into wallets and purses. Participants will complete scenic courses along the NTC Promenade at Liberty Station in Point Loma. A 5K run/walk will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a one-mile run/walk scheduled to take place at 8:30 a.m.. The USA Track and Field Association has sanctioned the event and certified the course, according to event organizers. The morning’s festivities will include live entertainment, refreshments, giveaways and a health fair. Each participant age 17 or under will receive a medal and awards will go to the top three finishers in each of the 14 divisions. Entry fees of between $15 and $30 will also earn participants an event T-shirt and box of Girl Scouts cookies. The event is presented by Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council, and sponsor Sharp Health Plan. Organizers say the event is designed to encourage girls, boys and adults to take the first step toward positive change and think about the importance of a balanced, healthful lifestyle. Run/walk attendees are encouraged to make a “New Day Resolution” about something they would like to change or add to their lives and ideas to help their communities. OB Fishing Derby slated for children on Saturday Local children will have the opportunity to fish for prizes from the Ocean Beach Pier during the annual OB Fishing Derby on Saturday, Sept. 27. Members of he Kiwanis Club of Ocean Beach will be on hand with punch, popcorn and prizes for children up to age 12 who catch a fish between 8 and 11 a.m. Families are encouraged to fish together, but in order to be eligible for a prize, the fish must actually be landed by the child. Participants must bring their own fishing gear. Bait will be provided by the Ocean Beach Pier tackle shop. No fishing license is required. Registration is free and is continuous from 8 to 11 a.m. in front of the bait shop. Prizes will be awarded beginning at 11 a.m. for the child who catches the most fish, as well as for the biggest, smallest, and “ugliest or most unusual” fish.
