City will collect auto waste, oil on Saturday
Do-it-yourself mechanics have the opportunity to safely dispose of and recycle their auto waste at the City of San Diego Auto Product Recycling Event on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 to 1 p.m.
The event will be held at Mission Bay South Shores in the parking lot east of Sea World.
The city offers this event eight times each year even though there are almost 90 certified oil centers throughout San Diego where people can dispose of uncontaminated oil, according to Nora Varner, hazardous materials inspector for the City of San Diego.
Varner said motor oil can become contaminated with heavy metals that include lead, magnesium and copper.
“Heavy metals are going to be absorbed and they stay in the sediment and the soil. It’s there forever and it never goes away,” she said.
Mechanics can get rid of motor oil, antifreeze, oil filters and car batteries.
“All the things that we’re collecting really do end up being recycled back into a product for sale,” Varner said.

Ex-LJCD coach pleads guilty, sentencing set
A former basketball coach at La Jolla Country Day School faces sentencing Feb. 13 after pleading guilty to committing an unlawful sexual act with a 17-year-old female.
Cesar Don Juan Flores, 26, of San Diego, faces up to a year in county jail in an agreement with the Deputy District Attorney’s office. On Jan. 14, San Diego Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sontag dismissed five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor after Flores pleaded guilty to one count.
Flores wrote the following on a court document to describe the offense: “Had sexual relations with a female who was 17 years old which is below the age of consent in California and who was more than three years younger than me.”
Flores also admitted to a sentencing enhancement that stated he was more than three years older than the victim, who was reportedly a student at the high school. The maximum sentence is three years in prison, but a prison term is unlikely.
A restraining order brought against Flores states he must remain 100 yards from the victim and her family. Flores remains free on $60,000 bond.
Flores, who was arrested last Aug. 27, had been a part-time assistant boys basketball coach, cross-country coach and summer camp worker at Country Day since he graduated from the school in 2000. He resigned from Country Day during the police investigation that culminated in his arrest, and had been pursuing postgrad studies at San Diego State University at the time of his arrest.
