Ellen Liversidge of Ocean Beach says Assembly Bill 1616, the new California Homemade Food Act, will allow her to start a home-based baking business. Under the law, Californians who cook in their own home kitchens are permitted to sell their products to restaurants and grocery stores. After getting her license, Liversidge plans to start a co-op of neighbors also interested in becoming cottage-food producers. Her first item, she anticipated, will be vegan chocolate chip “cooks.” That’s cookies without milk or butter, but with sunflower oil and maple syrup. She said she already has some interest from a local coffee shop. The business will provide “a nice second-income stream,” she said. “I like to think of myself as a job creator.” Semi-retired, Liversidge currently works as a part-time speech pathologist and teacher of English as a second language. But one of the best parts of being retired, she said, is riding her hot-pink tricycle. While other beachgoers are on bicycles, she likes the trike’s giant basket and comfortable seat — not to mention the better odds of not falling off.
