The annual religious art show at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (3502 Clairemont Drive), is open for free public viewing from 1 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 24, March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. Art works may be in oil, acrylic, water media, mixed media, graphics, photos, sculpture, digital art, wood carving or weaving. The photography exhibition, Wind & Water: Sailing in San Diego, features pictures by international yachting and nautical sport photographer, Bobby Grieser, of the world’s finest historic vessels, from sail to steam to submarine. The Hemlock Society of San Diego presents an educational and informative 30-minute documentary featuring people willing to talk about dying. The film will be followed by refreshments and a discussion with Mitsuo Tomita, MD, retired family-practice doctor, Kaiser, and a board member of the Hemlock Society of San Diego. Mothers and Daughters Club Assisting Philanthropies (MADCAPS) celebrates 58 years of community service with its annual benefit show at 7 p.m. (5 p.m. on Saturday) at Point Loma Nazarene University’s Brown Chapel Theater (3900 Lomaland Drive). The theme for this year’s show is “American Road Trip” with a tribute to American cities across the nation including Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City. The San Diego Pro Arte Voices, will present the premiere composition of L.O.S.T. by Jason Rosenberg, Ph.D., UCSD. The concert begins with a small group performing Lamentations of Jeremiah, followed by the integrated L.O.S.T. with the full choir. The Bahia Hotel is proposing an expansion that will eliminate road and beach access. At 9 a.m., a variety of paddlers, social media groups and clubs will join community members for a peaceful protest. To get to the event, take West Mission Bay Drive to Gleason Road. The San Diego Brain Injury Foundation (SDBIF) is hosting the 11th annual Walk For Recovery at Mission Bay Park (2688 East Mission Bay Drive), de Anza Cove in celebration of Brain Injury Awareness month. Shade Tree Brigade Save Peninsula Trees, to help green Ocean Beach and contribute to the cities goal of meeting the Climate Action Plan, is going out to look for neighborhoods with planting potential. The San Diego Chapter of the American Cetacean Society is pleased to have Justin Viezbicke, the Large Whale Entanglement Response coordinator for NOAA Fisheries, present how the rescue teams not only work to free these whales but also collect valuable information to help prevent future entanglements. In addition, Justin will discuss what people can do when they see an entangled whale. This free presentation will take place at Sumner Auditorium (8595 La Jolla Shores Drive). Sunday, March 18 Wisteria Garden Party with Ocean Beach Historical Society From 1 to 3:30 p.m., guests can spend the afternoon in the garden of the historic O.B. Wisteria Cottage (4761 Niagara Ave.) under the largest wisteria canopy in Ocean Beach. Listen to live music including songs from the 1920s by local Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters. Saturday, March 24 Exotic Expo Turquoise Animal Hospital (950 Turquoise St.) is hosting their seventh annual Exotic Expo from noon-4 p.m. They will have music, face painting, raffles, snacks and vendors like Project Wildlife, Legalize Ferrets and Turtle and Tortoise Society to help give the community info on caring for exotic pets. Sunday, March 25 The Ugly Dog Contest This family event is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds (2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.), where dog lovers can enter their pets into any of 10 categories. These categories include Ugly Dog, Best Costume, Best Mutt, Dog That Looks Like its Owner, and many more. This is a community event that attracts dogs from all over San Diego County. Meals on Wheels will host a 5K charity walk to help support San Diego’s senior population and proceeds from the event will help provide nutritious meals and a daily wellness checks for seniors. This fitness event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Mission Bay Park at Crown Point Drive and Moorland Drive. Prizes will be awarded to the team and individual with the most funds raised. In collaboration with San Diego based noise-music, art collective Stay Strange, the Arts District will present Hand of God: Conceptualizing Spirituality Through Experimental Music in Liberty Station’s Historic North Chapel (2881 Roosevelt Road). This free event features renowned local and national experimental musicians as well as spoken word and prayer to create a new interpretation of religion, spirituality and the after-life. For the 9th annual fitness event, this unique 5K features 15 muddy obstacles, a few mystery surprises and a sudsy post-race foam-fest. All participants will receive an official race tee and their first beer free. The race takes place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds (2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.) and tickets are $62-$82.
