Lifeguards on Feb. 3 rescued an injured man from the surf near La Jolla Shores after possibly falling off a sea bluff. Authorities said it was difficult to determine immediately what happened to the victim due to his limited ability to speak English. A witness reported the emergency at Shell Beach shortly after 9 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Lifeguards entered the water and pulled the 44-year-old man to shore. Medics took him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of a possible broken arm and other apparently non-life-threatening injuries, department spokesman Lee Swanson said. “There was a language barrier,” Swanson explained, “so (lifeguards) had difficulty in
determining exactly what happened to him.” Swanson added that the rescue personnel believed he might have fallen off a nearby cliff or slipped from an outcropping of waterfront boulders. – City News Service
