La Jolla Post Office will drop its bulk mail unit by May 8 in an effort to reduce inefficient services. While customers will be served by a speedier, more convenient service in Point Loma, they will also have to drive farther to drop off mail. La Jolla simply wasn’t generating enough bulk mail business to justify keeping it open, according to Postmaster Jeff Olsen. The clerk dedicates 53 minutes each day to bulk mail, but only receives one or two mailings daily, compared to the Carmel Mountain Post Office that averages 300 daily bulk mailings. Bulk mailings have been eliminated from post offices throughout the county in order to create a more centralized system. Through this method, mail will reach its destination quicker since trucks will not have to stop as often, and much of the mail will be submitted directly to the Carmel Mountain facility to be sorted, Olsen said. More loading docks and equipment will help to expedite the process, while a larger staff and longer hours will better assist the customers, according to a letter sent to business mailers from the Carmel Mountain Post Office. “[In La Jolla] if the weigh master went to lunch or to the bathroom, you were stuck,” said Pat Dahlberg, executive director of the La Jolla Historical Society, who, nevertheless, didn’t favor La Jolla losing its bulk mail service. La Jolla businesses can either take their bulk mail to the post office at 2535 Midway Drive, or to the facility at 11251 Rancho Carmel Drive. Either location will honor the discounted postage rate of 36 cents, three cents less than the first-class rate of 39 cents.
