The San Diego Sockers will be holding their second annual Celebrity Game at 5:05 p.m. Sunday, March 12 at the Valley View Casino Center. The home game will be the First Round Divisional match versus either Tacoma Stars or Ontario Fury.
Landon Donovan, one of the greatest American soccer players, has confirmed his participation during the halftime celebrity soccer game. Donovan, as an ambassador for MLS to San Diego, also has a special message for fans in attendance at the March 12 Sockers game: “Support local, be yourself (a soccer fan) and look for opportunities to bring others into the community. These things will hopefully help us get the signatures needed for a stadium in San Diego.”
The recent San Diego resident looks forward to participating in the Sockers celebrity game.
“I grew up knowing the name Sockers, I knew the Sockers better than I knew the Galaxy or DC United. It’s obvious something special has been here for a long time and I’ve always wanted to experience it. Having the ability to play in the game is really a dream come true and it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Donovan said. The San Diego Sockers, San Diego’s 14-time championship team, are at the forefront of the movement to bring MLS to San Diego. The soccer franchise sees the movement to bring MLS as opportunity to carry the torch of professional soccer in San Diego. Donovan and the Sockers will be working together to identify opportunities to collect the required signatures for a privately financed “SoccerCity / SDSU / Riverpark” compound at the current Qualcomm Stadium location.
Sean Bowers, general manager of the Sockers and former MLS defender, supports the MLS bid to San Diego.
“It’s great for the sport and the entire soccer community in San Diego. We totally support the bid and look forward to working with FS Investors, Landon Donovan and everyone else involved in making San Diego the premier location for the next MLS expansion team,” Bowers said.
The Sockers will also be holding the second annual Celebrity Game at halftime of the March 12 match. Fans may watch all the Sockers games live on MASLtv YouTube.
