A number of area scholastic lacrosse teams have been sticking to success in recent weeks.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights came into play this week at 5-4-1 (2-0).
In action last week, The Bishop’s School posted a 14-7 win over San Dieguito Academy.
Jacqueline Rhodes had a hat trick with three goals, while Emily Johnson, Paige Garett, Emily Reit, Haley Geier, Sophia Muller (two goals each) and Ali Bishop also scored.
On the boys side, Bishop’s scored wins over San Dieguito Academy (15-4) and La Jolla Country Day School (14-3) last week.
In the win over SDA, Trevor Sinclair and Mike D. Jensen led the way with four and three goals, respectively.
In the victory over LJCD, Tighe Thomas (six goals), Conner Thomas (three goals) and Zach Negroni (two goals) paced the offense.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Torreys under head coach Michael Tobey sported a 3-6 record as of last week.
According to Tobey, the team depends on offensive and defensive play by midfielders Dillon DuBois and Damian Bagby. The team’s strength, however, is defense.
“Sophomore goalie David Farley is the backbone of a tough defense. He’s supported by the defensive brother duo of Doug and Brendan Rogers,” Tobey remarked.
The Torreys have struggled a bit this season as they face a tough schedule. With only two seniors and two juniors (one of whom has been out the whole season with an injury) the team can be said to be extremely young, according to Tobey.
“The boys are rising to the challenges that face them, however, and working hard for the future,” Tobey added.
On the girls side, new head coach Dave Jenkins has the Lady Torreys in their third season of action.
“There’s a lot of interest in lacrosse among Upper School girls, indicated by the 30 players we have in the program this year,” Jenkins said. “We’re still a young team with only three seniors and a handful of juniors on our roster.”
Team captains this year include seniors Caitlin Bonacci and Izzy Richardson and junior Roya Bagheri. All three of these girls have been part of the program since its
inception. Other key players include sophomores Jodi Morris and Veronica Lee, both at the attack wing position.
New to the game and the school is junior Stephanie Rothenberg from Germany.
“Having never heard of lacrosse until literally five weeks ago, she’s worked hard and stepped into the starting goalie position,” Jenkins said. “Among all the freshmen on the team, our lone freshman starter is Rachel Locke at one of the low defense positions.”
“While we have not won a game yet this season, we continue to improve and should prove a worthy adversary in our upcoming league games,” Jenkins added.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings sported a 5-5 record as of last week for head coach Matt Rosenberg.
Key players to date have included sophomore Taylor Bourgeois, who has scored multiple goals in the team’s last few games. Also contributing are Spencer Robertson and Tony Sandoval.
“We played very strong teams in our early games and I believe that has helped us develop as a team,” Rosenberg said. “We are entering league play and are looking to finish a strong second behind Coronado. Our team is beginning to come together and is committed to finishing with momentum going into the playoffs.”
