The La Jolla High baseball team rebounded from a 6-0 loss to University City High to score a 6-2 win over Coronado last week. In doing so, the Vikings recorded their 18th win of the season and stayed tied for first place in the Western League.
In the 6-0 loss to UC, La Jolla managed only three hits on the day.
La Jolla bounced back to top Coronado as, trailing 2-1 in their final at-bat, the Vikings started the rally with singles from Robert Sprong and David Harpster. Blake Shelburne then lined a triple to the outfield to put La Jolla ahead, 3-2. Jack Peterson plated Shelburne on a suicide squeeze, while Jimmy Filter and Peter Sefton added RBI hits.
“It was a gutsy comeback from our team today,” La Jolla High head coach Gary Frank noted. “They refused to quit, and they kept believing that we would come out victorious, and they were right. This team has all the makings of a championship-caliber club. We are going to be a tough team to face come playoff time.”
The Bishop’s School also split a pair of contests last week.
The Knights scored an 8-6 win over Canyon Crest as Tommy Wornham hit his fifth home run of the season.
Bishop’s followed that with a 3-2 loss in eight innings to Horizon.
