The colorful floors, swings hanging from the ceiling and stuffed animals mounted on all the walls of Kids On the Go Therapy make it look more like a toy store than a physical therapy office, which is kind of the whole point.
“Our goal is for them just to think that they’re playing and having fun,” said Dr. Mary Hermes, director of Kids On the Go. “And hopefully they don’t even realize that they’ve been doing a ton of work.”
While Hermes has been providing pediatric physical and occupational therapy to children ages 0 to 21 for a few years, she did so by making in-house visits to her patients in the greater San Diego area. This past December, she opened the first Kids On the Go office in La Jolla, 5759 La Jolla Blvd. The new building served as a major milestone for Dr. Hermes and her team of five, who not only serve children but their moms too.
“When they come in, a lot of the focus is of course on the new baby,” she said. “We started noticing some of these moms were limping or having XYZ problems. Now it’s not uncommon for us to see the kids and the mom.”
Even Hermes has seen adult patients make some impressive progress. She said children are more likely to make a lot of progress very quickly.
“We saw an infant who had an extremely large stroke that left her paralyzed on one side of her body. By the time she was finished with us, she had regained full-use. Her parents and I joked that we may have worked her too hard, because the side she had lost was actually stronger than the other.”
