The San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League this week hired veteran coach Kevin Dineen, 55, as their second franchise head coach. He replaces Dallas Eakins who was hired to take over the Anaheim Ducks, the Gulls’ parent club.
Dineen played 19 seasons in the NHL and has coached there and the AHL. He has compiled consistent winning records including earning a Stanley Cup as an assistant with the Chicago Blackhawks. He also led the Canadian national women’s team to a gold medal at the 2014 Olympics.
The Gulls home opener this season will be Oct. 18 at the Pechanga Arena.
