More than six weeks have transpired since the checkered flag waved over San Diego Bayfair’s Air National Guard hydroplane race feature at Mission Bay — and officials have come up with a new winner: the original victor, Steve David, in the Oh Boy! Oberto boat. Race officials said to blame it on a malfunctioning pressure gauge, rechecked by an Orange County manufacturer.  Bayfair’s technical board ruled in favor of the Miss Madison team’s appeal and took the victory away from rookie Jimmy Shane in the Graham Trucking boat.  David’s boat initially won but was then disqualified because it failed a post-race inspection. The team contended that the readings on the race officials’ monitoring element was incorrect and protested the decision.   H1 Unlimited Chairman Sam Cole agreed to hear the protest and said the governing body took the extraordinary step of sending all of the monitoring equipment for inspection to the manufacturer.
