Dana Point’s Joyce Hoffman rockets across a wave during the surf portion of the Aug. 19 UCSD Cancer Center Luau & Longboard Invitational at Scripps Pier.
Hoffman won U.S. Surfing Championships in 1965, ’66 and ’67, was reportedly the first woman to surf Hawaii’s Banzai Pipeline and is one of the original eight inductees into the International Surfing Hall of Fame.
The day also brought out Bob “The Greek” Bolen, 1972 world champion Peter Townend and surfer/shaper Herbie Fletcher, father of Christian and grandfather of Sean from TV’s “John of Cincinnatti.”
The 14th annual event raised more than $600,000 to top last year’s record.
