One of two men charged in connection with murdering a South Mission Beach resident in 2003 has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and now faces 13 years in state prison. Gerardo Soto, 30, of Arizona will be sentenced June 23 in San Diego Superior Court. As a result of the plea, Judge Charles Gill dismissed a murder charge pending against Soto in the shooting death of Mshindi Ford, 33. Soto faces a maximum term of 13 years and eight months in prison, according to court records. He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery and remains in custody on $500,000 bail. Soto admitted to his role in driving the gunman away from the scene. Richard Cortel Moye, 29, of Arizona is still being charged with murder and awaits an Aug. 24 trial. Moye is charged as the triggerman in Ford’s murder on March 18, 2003. The shooting took place in the victim’s home around 2 p.m. in the 700 block of Dover Court. According to testimony from the preliminary hearing, Moye shot Ford during a marijuana sale that went sour. Soto waited outside in a car a block away and drove them both back to Arizona, according to records. “I conspired with Moye to rob the victim in his home … driving to San Diego with Moye and setting up a meeting with the victim,” wrote Soto in a court document. “During the robbery, Moye killed the victim.” Following a long investigation, Moye and Soto were arrested in May 2010 in Arizona. Moye, who has pleaded not guilty, remains in custody on $1 million bail.
