The full moon rises over La Jolla Aug. 9, as viewed from Scripps Pier, which was open for a special full-moon walk with Birch Aquarium. Participants learned about the pier’s history, took water samples and studied nocturnal marine life. In the Algonquian tribes, the full moon of August was called the Moon of Green Corn or the Sturgeon Moon, since the large Great Lakes fish were easily caught this time of year. The Lakota called this full moon the Black Cherries Moon.
