The Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy, the first of its kind in Southern California, celebrated its grand opening on Friday, Sept. 27. The event kicked off with a dragon dance performance by the Three Treasures Cultural Arts Society, featuring Barnard students. In attendance were SDUSD superintendent Cindy Marten, Board of Education members Richard Barrera and Kevin Beiser, interim Mayor Todd Gloria, representatives from Kevin Faulconer’s office and representatives from county Supervisor Ron Robert’s office. Sept. 27, 2013 was declared Barnard Asian Pacific Language Academy day by the City of San Diego, the San Diego City Council and Roberts.
The newly established Barnard Asian Language Foundation received $34,000 in contributions from organizations around the world. The Japan Foundation awarded Barnard with $20,000 to launch the Japanese Language and Culture program. Other donations came from the San Diego Korean Parent Association, House of China, the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA), Better Chinese Publications and the Hom Family Foundation.
Barnard offers a Chinese Mandarin immersion program, with exploratory classes in Korean and Japanese language and culture. Additional languages, including Vietnamese and Tagalog, will be offered in the future.
The celebration concluded with a presentation of performances by the Chongching performing troupe from Chongching, China. Escuela secundaria de la bahía de la misión
