MISSION BAY HIGH
• Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW), a student organization at UC San Diego, is offering a Student Sustainability Outreach Day on Thursday, April 24, at Mission Bay High School. It will feature interactive workshops and a panel of speakers that will teach students about environmental and social sustainability. For information and/or to register, please visit our website at esw.ucsd.edu and click the “Events & Outreach” tab and then “Student Sustainability Outreach Day 2014.”
• Congratulations to our scholar-athletes. The following student athletes were honored by the San Diego Union-Tribune. The U-T All-Academic Team of juniors and seniors participated in the winter season of the California Interscholastic Federation sports and maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The were: girls’ basketball: Heidi Ememenegger and Micela Ross; boys’ basketball: James Burdette, Jose Collado, Kotaro (Tristan) Kamata, Geronimo Mariscal, Kenneth Deion Maye, Isiah Milan, Andre Petties-Wilson and Alexander Wilbourn; girls’ soccer: Carly Dunn, Arianna Linley, Janae Lopez, Jala Piland; boys’ soccer: Eduardo Arce, Jose Barragan, Cesar Castro Villa, Daniel Flores, Daniel Lizaola Lopez, Marco Mejiaz De Leon, Jackson Menezes, Luis Radilla Moya and Nicholas Schoettle; girls’ water polo: Samantha Lee, Hannah Lobato, Jessica Loomis, Rachel Odermatt, Sophia Richey and Priscilla Tamborini; wrestling: Isiah Brown. • Congratulations to PB Middle student Taylor K., who coordinated a service project that collected 387 books to be donated to St. Jude’s Hospital. Taylor, who also serves as the Builders (Service) Club president and is a member of the Garden Club, Mathletes Club and plays on the school volleyball team. She’s a great example of a student who enjoys all that PB Middle IB has to offer.
• Summer camp at PBMS is open to incoming 6th-, 7th- and 8th-graders from June 23-July 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. There is no cost to families. Applications will be sent home via current 5th-, 6th- and 7th-grade classrooms. Return application ASAP to ensure a spot. PBMS will accept 60 applicants.
• YMCA summer camp at PBMS. Visit www.lajolla.ymca.org/membership/camp-faq.htma for more information regarding cost and dates. Y camps are for all ages. PACIFIC BEACH ELEMENTARY • Thursday, April 17, 2014: Family Fun Night Fundraiser at Rubio’s, 910 Grand Avenue.
• Don’t miss out on Mardi Gras at the Soledad Club and an opportunity to support Pacific Beach Elementary. Join us April 25 from 5 to 10 p.m. for an unforgettable night of music by the Euphoria Brass band, along with fortune telling, food, drinks and auction offerings, including a Hank Warner surfboard, Taylor guitar, a week in Big Bear, a getaway to Napa Valley and a private dinner catered by Dave Vindiola of Eat, Drink, Repeat Bistro. The first auction table closes at 6:30 pm, so don’t miss out!
• New student registration takes place every day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; PBE offers two before-/after-school child-care programs. Check with the front office for more information. KATE SESSIONS ELEMENTARY
• Help Kate Sessions win $5,000 and Susie Horton win the DonorNation.org Volunteer of the Year Award. Horton has been nominated as Kate Sessions’ School Volunteer of the Year on DonorNation.org. Visit DonorNation.org and vote for Susie. If Susie wins, not only will she win a ton of prizes, Kate Sessions will receive a $5,000 donation from DonorNation.org!. Encourage your friends and family to cast their online vote now through April 24.
• Kate Sessions students are performing “Charlotte’s Web,” directed by Deirdre Andrews. There is a free performance on Thursday, May 1 at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium.
• Spring is finally here, and to celebrate, iGive will donate $5 per new member who signs up to support Friends of Kate Sessions during the month of April. No purchase necessary. Sign up at www.igive.com/welcome/warm welcome. • The students at Kate Sessions are reaping the efforts of being green and organic. They are harvesting vegetables they planted in the school garden. Each grade level is responsible for planting, watering and harvesting vegetables. They are growing cauliflower, corn, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, radishes and lemons. The garden provides students the opportunity to experience how food can be grown and harvested here at school and the education on how to start a garden at home, as well as having the opportunity to taste the fruits of their labors. • 250 Crown Point Junior Music Academy students will be attending the upcoming Classics 4 Kids concert on April 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the Balboa Theatre. CPJMA students have a close partnership with Classics 4 Kids, a nonprofit organization providing informative and entertaining educational programs that reach out and inspire children to appreciate the great orchestral music. As a close partner with Crown Point Junior Music Academy, Classics 4 Kids has invited CPJMA Suzuki Violin students once again to perform on stage with a live orchestra and special guest Wylie Gustafson, the yodeling, singing cowboy from Montana. Come join us and see the talent our Suzuki students will demonstrate up on stage. • Tuesday April 22, Earth Day from 11 a.m to noon, fourth- and fifth-grade Crown Point Junior Music Academy students will take part in a neighborhood cleanup event in partnership with the Pacific Beach Town Council. Our clean-up crew will walk along the Crown Point campus and in the neighborhood picking up trash to beautify Pacific Beach. FRIENDS OF PACIFIC BEACH SECONDARY SCHOOLS (FOPBSS)
• A FOPBSS meeting takes place on Wednesday, April 23 at Mission Bay High at 6 p.m..
• Register for the School Yard Dash 5K Run or just donate. This is our largest fundraiser is the School Yard Dash 5K Run on Saturday, April 26 and now is the time to donate $20 or register to receive a T-shirt, medal, brunch and a goodie bag full of freebies. The morning will be a fun-filled event with music, rock-climbing wall, volleyball and vendor village. Students pay $20 until the day of the event. Register now at www.schoolyarddash.org. Proceeds go toward books, classroom supplies and enrichment to make our schools a better place to learn. MISSION BAY CLUSTER
The next Mission Bay Cluster meeting will be Thursday, May 1 at 6 p.m. at Kate Sessions Elementary. We will have updates on the MBHS stadium, the PBMS YMCA, the latest budget news from the San Diego Unified School District and the impacts to our schools, exciting Mission Bay High School Class of 2014 college-bound senior information and other updates from all six MB Cluster schools. Join us for one of the last remaining cluster meetings this year.
