It took crews more than 45 minutes to shut off a broken hydrant that sent a geyser shooting almost 20 feet into the air in the Mount Soledad area the morning of Nov. 6. San Diego police say a hit-and-run driver likely struck the hydrant sometime before 3 a.m. at Rutgers Road and Vista Claridad, sending water spewing down the street in both directions. A piece of a Toyota Camry front bumper was found among the debris, police said. San Diego Fire-Rescue and San Diego Public Utilities crews responded and cleared the debris from an access hole to finally shut off the water. No homes were flooded. Police are still searching for the driver.
