The Congregational Church of La Jolla will celebrate its centennial rededication this month. On the first Sunday of August in 1916 the church was completed and dedicated. To celebrate 100 years of worship in La Jolla, the church has a weekend of fun and service planned.
“We have been exploring our history all year and this is a culmination of our explorations,” Pastor Sam Greening said.
The official rededication will be on Sunday Aug. 7. On Aug. 5, the Friday before the rededication, the original 1916 cornerstone will be removed to reveal a 100-year-old time capsule.
“The following week we will fill another time capsule with items from today and return it to the ground for others to uncover 100 years from now,” Pastor Greening said.
Sunday’s events will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a celebration of the Lord’s Supper, followed by coffee at 11 a.m. and a congregational meeting at noon. The meeting will discuss important decisions impacting the future of the church. Following the meeting, there will be an ice cream social and then the official rededication service at 3 p.m. led by Pastor Emeritus John Benbow. The service, and all rededication events, are free and open to the public and members of other churches are encouraged to attend.
“This will affirm our history and welcome others into our church and our gift of a building,” Greening said.
